2013 BAFTA Game Award Nominations Revealed

Get your monkey suit out of the closet, watch an episode of Downton Abbey and polish your best Jakobs sidearm, because it is awards season in the UK. The nominees of the high-brow British Academy Games Awards (BAFTA) were revealed today and some of the choices were a bit surprising.

The PSN exclusive that everyone “wanted” to play, but couldn’t (because, well, its a PSN exclusive),  Journey, leads the pack with 8 nominations, including one for Best Game.

Right behind the universally-acclaimed Journey is The Walking Dead, the superb point-and-click Adventure game from Telltale, with seven nominations. The two other games receiving the most love are Far Cry 3 (6 nominations) and Dear Esther (5 nominations).

BLOPS2 got nominated for Innovation? WTF, Sir

Just from the top nominations list, it looks like BAFTA is going high-brow with a definite emphasis on art and storytelling.

Although this is a bit strange to see, it is actually quite encouraging, because it shows that games are evolving into a more complete entertainment experience. And the best thing is that the games which are trying to create this emotional and artful atmosphere are succeeding. Lets hope this trend continues…..but I still want to shoot aliens in the face, so dont forget your roots, gaming community!

For an exact look at who was nominated, check out this semi-complete list of the categories (“Family” and “Mobile” categories need not apply):

Well, you can definitely tell this is a “British” awards list, but it is a pretty decent (albeit safe) representation of the best games in 2012 (although I have no idea how Diablo 3 and Dark Souls made the “Strategy” list). But seriously BAFTA, COD:BLOPS2 for the “Innovation” award? That is somewhat disturbing.

What do you think of this nomination list? Were any games criminally absent from the BAFTA Awards?

I would assume they nominated COD Black Ops 2 for the innovation award due to Treyarch’s decision to stray away from the traditional COD formula. Still, I think it is pretty safe to say that BO2 will not be bringing home the innovation award. After all, it is still a Call of Duty game that follows the same formula more or less of past instalments of the series.
