What Would Will Wright Do? How the Creator of SimCity Plays…..SimCity

Every time I play SimCity, there is a nagging feeling in the back of my mind that my strategy sucks. And in most situations, I’m right, although it usually takes numerous man-made disasters and complete economic ruin before realizing this. But constant failure doesn’t mean I will ever stop trying to create my own version of a perfect society.

My cities never look like this....

While on the lookout for new methods of play, knowing who to listen to can make a big difference. So when the actual creator of the whole thing discusses his play-style, it may be a good idea to take note.

Will Wright, the legendary game maker who started the entire city simulation genre, took some time to discuss his preferred strategies for the latest installment with current lead designer, Stone Librande.

This is interesting to hear because he had no actual role in the new SimCity, and is approaching the game more as a fan than a developer. It is always fun to watch someone who is linked to the game, but not involved in the production. The jaded view that comes with being a developer is removed, but the knowledge of the series is still there, making the insights discussed quite intriguing:

Great insight from the paragon of city simulations. Of course, there is a certain amount of bias and salesmanship in videos like these, but it is still fascinating nonetheless. The wait for SimCity is almost over, and you will finally be able to get your hands on the latest installment March 5th.
